Often the antenatal period is so full of appointments focusing on the wellbeing of the baby, preparation for birth, and getting our life organised to be off work for a while.

Even if women intend to breastfeeding, we often aren’t given enough exposure to breastfeeding or education in the lead up. Even as a health professional working in this area, supporting women in their pregnancy and postnatal stages, who attended the classes and read all the usual materials, I felt unprepared when my little one didn’t show much interest in latching in hospital. See here for my story.

The fact is, breastfeeding is a learned skill, and requires you and your little one to learn to communicate and fit together. Sometimes it comes easily, sometimes we are lucky enough to have help on hand to ensure things go smoothly. But often it may not, and we may be given different advice by everyone we encounter and feel more overwhelmed. Starting your postnatal journey with as much information may help you feel more equipped if things become tricky.

Currently in Warragul we have Group Education by a hospital based Lactation Consultant (in person, and virtual options).

Antenatal consultations can also requested with the hospital Breastfeeding Support Program.

PREPARATION FOR BREASTFEEDING
